Trastevere received its first supply of public water only in the first century AD, when&nbsp;<strong>Emperor Trajan&nbsp;<\/strong>provided&nbsp;the&nbsp;area&nbsp;with&nbsp;an&nbsp;aqueduct&nbsp;(Aqua&nbsp;Traiana).&nbsp;Reconstructed&nbsp;several times between the 15<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;and 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;centuries, the fountain\u2019s architects include luminaries such as Bramante, Rainaldi, Bernini and Fontana.&nbsp;<strong>Bernini&nbsp;<\/strong>relocated&nbsp;the fountain to its current location in the center of the square.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposite the fountain on the other side is a great brick structure, the&nbsp;<strong>Palazzo&nbsp;San&nbsp;Callisto<\/strong>,&nbsp;named&nbsp;after&nbsp;the&nbsp;Pope&nbsp;whose&nbsp;house&nbsp;(titulus)&nbsp;served as a private church for the early Christian community and over which Christians built the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. The current version of this palace, constructed in the 17<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century, now houses offices of the diocese the&nbsp;City&nbsp;and apartment residences for members of the Roman Courier, officials who work in the Vatican.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"312\" height=\"223\" src=\"https:\/\/romeguide.hcc-nd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-671.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-826\" srcset=\"https:\/\/romeguide.hcc-nd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-671.png 312w, https:\/\/romeguide.hcc-nd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-671-300x214.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 312px) 100vw, 312px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Also&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;piazza&nbsp;is the&nbsp;<strong>Palazzo Cavalieri-&nbsp;Ossoli<\/strong>.
