The\u00a0<strong>Palazzo\u00a0dei\u00a0Apostoli\u00a0<\/strong>(Palazzo\u00a0della\u00a0Rovere),\u00a0with\u00a0its\u00a0Renaissance\u00a0portal,\u00a0lies\u00a0immediately\u00a0to\u00a0the left of the church. Its second cloister wall preserves a\u00a0<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">monument to the\u00a0City\u2019s most revered artist<\/span>,\u00a0<\/strong>once interred here.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"171\" height=\"222\" src=\"https:\/\/romeguide.hcc-nd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-283.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-414\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So\u00a0greatly was\u00a0he esteemed in his own age that to him is\u00a0reserved\u00a0the honor\u00a0of\u00a0being\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0European\u00a0artist\u00a0whose\u00a0biography\u00a0was\u00a0written\u00a0by Giorgio Vasari <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">(<strong>Lives of the\u00a0Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors and\u00a0Architects<\/strong>)<\/span> while the artist was still alive.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"159\" height=\"213\" src=\"https:\/\/romeguide.hcc-nd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-286.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-417\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after his burial Michelangelo\u2019s nephew Lionardo and friends clandestinely removed his uncle\u2019s body on the orders of the Medici and\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>transported\u00a0it\u00a0by\u00a0wagon\u00a0to\u00a0Florence\u00a0for\u00a0entombment\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0Church\u00a0of\u00a0Santa Croce<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"145\" height=\"220\" src=\"https:\/\/romeguide.hcc-nd.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-285.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-416\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0palazzo\u00a0somewhat\u00a0resembles\u00a0Palazzo\u00a0Venezia.\u00a0<strong>Guiliano\u00a0da\u00a0Sangallo\u00a0<\/strong>designed it in the late 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century for Guiliano della Rovere (later, Pope Julius II), titular bishop of the attached church.
